Running Wild in the Brecon Beacons

Pen y Fan, the flat-topped peak of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, rises to 886 meters, making it the highest point in Southern Britain. This stunning summit is not only a magnet for hikers but also a popular destination for runners, especially those drawn to the challenges of trail running and ultramarathons. Conveniently located just a few minutes from Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa, Pen y Fan offers a thrilling opportunity for those looking to combine a stay in luxurious comfort with the exhilaration of mountain running.

Why not take on the challenge of running up Pen y Fan? This area is a hotspot for ultramarathons, attracting runners from across the UK and beyond. The varied and rugged terrain makes it an ideal training ground for both seasoned ultra-runners and those looking to take their first steps into the world of trail running. A stay at Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa places you right in the heart of this dynamic landscape, providing the perfect base for both race day and training sessions in the hills.

But what exactly is an ultramarathon? Any running event longer than the traditional marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres qualifies as an ultramarathon, and these races are growing in popularity, particularly those set off-road on trails. If the idea of pushing beyond marathon distance on some of the UK’s most beautiful terrain excites you, then the Brecon Beacons are calling.
