Winter Wonders in Powys: A Festive Season with Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa
As the festive season unfolds across our hills and valleys, we invite you to trade ordinary for magical: mist-touched trails, mellow candlelit market squares, and crisp nights under skies glittering with stars. From here in Powys, the heart of Wales, we are perfectly placed to explore festive charms both near and a little further afield.
Winter walks and wild beauty in the Brecon Beacons
One of the greatest gifts the festive season brings is the air itself: cool, clear, and sharp with promise. Wrap up in layers, don good boots, and step out onto the many public footpaths of the Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog. The renowned ridge-walk up Pen y Fan is still possible (weather permitting) and offers panoramic views over frosted moors. For a gentler stroll, try the Four Falls Trail or snow-laced valley walks through Waterfall Country — a joy even in winter’s hush.
Of course, after such walks, you’ll want warmth and comfort – the perfect opportunity to enjoy a drink and a meal at The Lodge, our much-loved bar and bistro. As night draws in early, the Brecon Beacons shine — indeed, the park is an International Dark Sky Reserve, so if skies are clear, head out to gaze at constellations, meteors or even (if you’re really lucky) the faint ribbon of aurora.
For festive cheer, don’t miss the “Santa Special” steam train rides via the Brecon Mountain Railway, fully decked in seasonal lights and complete with grotto stops for youngsters.
Hay-on-Wye: books, baubles, and sparkle
A short drive away lies Hay-on-Wye, the famed “town of books,” which in December dresses itself in festive charm. Stroll its narrow lanes lined with independent bookshops (Richard Booth’s among them), searching for rare editions, festive volumes, or gifts to treasure.
You might also visit Hay Castle, now a creative and cultural venue, where seasonal exhibitions, live music, or community events often take place. If your visit aligns with the Hay Festival Winter Weekend (27–30 November 2025), you’ll enjoy literary talks, craft workshops, and vintage markets — a gentle bridge into December’s spirit, and the ideal chance to get some present shopping in the bag.

A (brisk) day-trip to Cardiff
If you’re eager for a city experience amid your rural retreat, Cardiff lies within reach for a day excursion. The Welsh capital in December transforms into a festive hub, with Christmas marketsaround Cardiff Castle and City Hall, twinkling lights down the high street, and pop-up ice rinks and seasonal street performances.
From Nant Ddu you can easily make a day trip by car, enjoying culture, shopping, perhaps the National Museum, and a contrast to the quietude of Powys.
Final note from us at Nant Ddu
We believe the festive season here is made of small wonders: the hush of frost over a valley, the warmth of mulled drinks by the fire, the sudden blink of stars in a clear sky. As your hosts, we’ll be delighted to assist you in planning guided walks, stargazing sessions, or festive railway rides. Bring your curiosity, your sense of wonder, and your woollies — and allow Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa to be your gracious base for a winter getaway to remember.
