As the vibrant capital of Wales, Cardiff offers a rich mix of history, culture, and modern attractions, making it the perfect destination for a day trip. Around 45 minutes away by car, a visit to the city makes a great contrast to the wild nature of our Brecon Beacons location here at Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa. Whether you’re an art lover, history buff, or foodie, Cardiff has something for everyone. Here’s how to make the most of your day in this vital and exciting city.

Morning: Dive into Cardiff’s Rich History

Start your day with a visit to Cardiff Castle, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Situated right in the city center, this medieval fortress has a history dating back over 2,000 years, from Roman times to the Victorian era. Take a guided tour of the castle’s opulent interiors, including the beautiful Castle Apartments, and don’t miss the chance to climb to the top of the Norman keep for panoramic views of the city. The castle grounds are perfect for a morning stroll, and you’ll often find events or re-enactments happening here.

Just a short walk from the castle, you’ll find Bute Park, a peaceful oasis in the heart of Cardiff. The park stretches along the River Taff and features lovely walking paths, gardens, and historic features like the Cardiff Castle Animal Wall. It’s the perfect spot to relax or enjoy a coffee before continuing your adventure.

Midday: Museums and Culture

No trip to Cardiff is complete without a visit to the National Museum Cardiff. A short stroll from the city centre this museum offers a world-class collection of art, archaeology, and natural history. Whether you’re admiring works by Welsh artists or exploring the fascinating geological exhibits, this museum provides a perfect midday diversion. Admission is free, making it an excellent stop for those looking to experience culture on a budget.

If you’re interested in Welsh history and heritage, consider a visit to the St. Fagans National Museum of History, located just outside the city center. While it requires a little more time, it’s well worth the effort. This open-air museum brings Welsh culture to life, with historical buildings, demonstrations, and a glimpse into rural life over the centuries.

For something a little different, head over to Cardiff Bay. Once a bustling docklands area, it’s now a lively district filled with waterfront restaurants, bars, and attractions. Take a stroll along the harbor, and stop by the Wales Millennium Centre, a stunning modern building known for hosting major performances, from opera to musicals. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but you might want to check the schedule to see if you can catch a show during your trip.

Afternoon: Shopping and Scenic Views

After exploring Cardiff’s cultural gems, it’s time for some retail therapy. Head over to Cardiff’s Arcades, a series of beautifully restored Victorian shopping arcades. These charming streets are lined with unique boutiques, cafes, and independent stores. It’s a great place to pick up some quirky souvenirs, enjoy a bite to eat, or simply wander through the historic passageways.

If you’re looking for a scenic view to cap off your day, take a trip to Cardiff Bay or the nearby Roath Park. The park offers a tranquil escape with its lovely lake, rose gardens, and the iconic Italian Gardens. Alternatively, head to Clifton Hill for panoramic views of the city and beyond, especially if you’re there in the late afternoon or early evening.

Romantic Things to Do in the Brecon Beacons

While the spa offers the perfect opportunity for relaxation, the Brecon Beacons National Parkprovides a breathtaking setting for romance. Here are three must-do experiences to make your Valentine’s break truly magical:

1. Starry Nights Under Dark Skies
The Brecon Beacons is one of the few designated International Dark Sky Reserves, making it a prime spot for stargazing. On a clear February evening, wrap up warm, grab a blanket, and head to a remote location like the National Park Visitor Centre. Gaze at constellations and the shimmering Milky Way for a romantic experience you’ll treasure forever. Be sure to warm up with a drink in our bar when you get back!

2. Hike to a Waterfall Wonderland
What could be more romantic than a visit to the enchanting Waterfall Country? Take a gentle hike along the trails near Pontneddfechan to discover cascading waterfalls like Sgwd Yr Eira, where you can even walk behind the water. The serene setting, surrounded by lush woodland, makes it a perfect spot for couples who love nature. Don’t forget to snap a photo by the falls as a memento of your Valentine’s Day adventure.

3. Explore Quaint Villages and Cozy Pubs
The Brecon Beacons is dotted with charming villages like Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye. With crisp air, fewer visitors, and landscapes transformed by frost and early blooms, it’s an escape like no other.

What to Expect

Winter months in the Brecon Beacons bring a raw beauty. The rugged peaks, like nearbyPen y Fan—the highest point in southern Britain—are often dusted with snow, creating postcard-perfect views. As you hike, you’ll likely encounter frozen waterfalls, such as the spectacular Sgwd yr Eira, where the cascading water glistens like crystal. March heralds the first signs of spring, with bursts of daffodils dotting the meadows and lambs frolicking in the fields, adding a lively touch to the serene landscapes.

Weather can, of course, be unpredictable, with misty mornings, occasional rain, and clear sunny spells. Layers are your best friend—think waterproof jackets, warm hats, and sturdy boots!

Top Activities

1. Hiking and Walking Trails:
Winter hiking in the Brecon Beacons is a dream for outdoor lovers. Test your endurance on the Beacons Way or enjoy shorter, scenic walks like the Four Falls Trail. The crispness of the season enhances the sense of adventure, and nothing beats the satisfaction of conquering a frosty summit.

2. Stargazing:
January and February offer some of the darkest skies of the year. Brecon Beacons is an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it a prime spot for stargazing. Bundle up, head to spots like the Usk Reservoir or Llangorse Lake, and prepare to be dazzled by constellations and even the Milky Way.

3. Cosy Pubs and Local Food:
After exploring, warm up in our Lodge Bar and Restaurant, or discover the area’s charming pubs. Enjoy hearty Welsh dishes by the fire—cawl (a traditional soup) is a must-try.

4. Adventure Activities:
For thrill-seekers, the rivers and gorges are perfect for winter canyoning. In March, as the weather warms, activities like horse riding and mountain biking kick into gear.

Don’t Miss This Hidden Gem

Visit the Brecon Mountain Railway for a scenic steam train ride through snow-dusted valleys—it’s pure winter magic!

From snow-kissed landscapes to blossoming hillsides, the Brecon Beacons in these months promise an unforgettable blend of tranquility and adventure, and make a great way to start 2025. Pack your spirit of exploration and discover Wales at its wildest and most wonderful!

Standing proudly at 886 meters (2900 feet), Pen y Fan is the highest peak in South Wales, offering breathtaking views of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. This iconic mountain is a magnet for walkers, drawing visitors year-round to experience its rugged beauty and panoramic vistas. With a variety of routes to the summit, Pen y Fan caters to all levels of hikers, from families with young children to seasoned mountaineers seeking a challenge.

Pen y Fan is undoubtedly one of Wales’ most popular walking destinations, and for good reason. On clear days, the views from the peak are nothing short of spectacular. The rolling hills stretch out endlessly, their ancient cliffs framing the landscape in dramatic fashion. However, like its northern counterpart Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Pen y Fan’s popularity can sometimes detract from the experience, especially during the busy summer months. September and October are great times to visit, with less people but still a good chance of pleasant weather. For those who prefer solitude on their hikes, nearby alternatives like the Black Mountains or the Cambrian Mountains offer quieter trails.

For those set on conquering Pen y Fan, several routes provide access to the summit. The most well-known paths include the Beacons Way and the Taff Trail. For cyclists, National Cycle Network Route 8 or the Taff Trail offers a scenic ride through the region. Traveling by car, the A470 road is the main artery leading to Pen y Fan. This route connects Llandudno in North Wales to Cardiff in the south, passing directly through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. The main car park at Pont-ar-Daf is conveniently located eight miles south of Brecon on the A470, which runs outside Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa. We are just 3.5 miles form Pont-ar-Daf, so it couldn’t be more convenient. The smaller Cwm Gwdi car park offers another option to the north of the mountain. However, both car parks can become very crowded, so arriving early is recommended. It’s also important to note that both are managed by the National Trust, with parking charges applying 24 hours a day.

Two popular routes for ascending Pen y Fan cater to different levels of hikers. The first, often dubbed “The Motorway” by locals, is a gentle 4-mile (6.5 km) circular walk starting from the Storey Arms Outdoor Centre or Pont ar Daf car park. This family-friendly route, which climbs from 440 meters to the 886-meter summit, is manageable even for young children. Many families return year after year, like Cardiff resident Michael Rhys, who fondly recalls his six-year-old daughter completing the hike multiple times.

For those seeking a more demanding trek, we recommend the 11-mile (18.5 km) Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn, and Taf Fechan Circular offers a challenging but rewarding experience. This route takes in several peaks, including Corn Du (873 meters) and Cribyn (795 meters), and offers a taste of the region’s ancient history, with Bronze Age burial sites scattered across the summits. The climb is steep in places, but the sense of accomplishment and the stunning views from the top make it well worth the effort. You will be sure to appreciate our spa and a hearty meal our Lodge restaurant after tackling this one!

Safety should always be a priority when hiking in the mountains. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so it’s essential to check the forecast before setting out. Proper footwear, plenty of water, and sun protection are key, especially on hot days (yes, they can happen, even in Wales!). Families should keep a close eye on children and dogs, particularly near the summit where the drop is steep.

Pen y Fan offers a truly memorable experience for those who venture to its peak, combining natural beauty with a touch of history. Whether taking the gentle path or tackling the more challenging route, visitors to this majestic mountain are sure to leave with lasting memories of South Wales’ highest point. So get planning, pack your hiking gear, and make Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa your basecamp – your Welsh adventure awaits!

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is a vibrant and captivating festival that showcases the best of Welsh culture, arts, and language. Held annually during the first week of August, this iconic event attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, all eager to immerse themselves in the rich traditions and contemporary expressions of Welsh identity. With its origins dating back over a thousand years, the National Eisteddfod offers a unique blend of history, music, literature, and art, making it a must-visit experience for anyone looking to explore the cultural heart of Wales.

A Brief History of the National Eisteddfod

The Eisteddfod tradition dates back to the 12th century, with the first known event held in Cardigan in 1176, organised by the Lord Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth. The term “Eisteddfod” itself derives from the Welsh word meaning “a sitting,” reflecting the gathering of poets and musicians who competed in various artistic challenges. Over the centuries, the Eisteddfod has evolved into a celebration of Welsh cultural expression, gaining official recognition in the 19th century.

In 1861, the modern National Eisteddfod was established, and since then, it has been held annually, rotating between different locations across Wales. Each year, the festival is hosted by a different town or city, transforming the area into a lively hub of artistic activity. This year, the Eisteddfod is taking place in Rhondda Cynon Taf, 3rd-10th of August. An area rich in cultural and industrial history, once the heart of Wales’s coal mining industry, it now boasts beautiful valleys, heritage trails, and vibrant Welsh culture. Visitors can explore the Rhondda Heritage Park, stunning landscapes, and enjoy the warm hospitality of its communities.

The event is deeply rooted in the preservation and promotion of the Welsh language and culture, making it a symbol of national pride and unity.

A Feast of Art, Music, and Literature

At the heart of the National Eisteddfod are its competitions, which cover a wide array of disciplines including music, poetry, dance, and visual arts. Participants of all ages and backgrounds come together to compete for prestigious awards and scholarships, with the festival serving as a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills. The highlight of the Eisteddfod is the Chairing of the Bard, a ceremonial event where the winning poet is awarded an intricately carved chair, a tradition that honours the finest in Welsh poetry.

The festival’s Maes, or main field, is a bustling area filled with pavilions, stages, and stalls. Visitors can explore a variety of cultural exhibits, attend workshops, and enjoy performances by renowned artists and local talent. The Maes is also home to an array of food stalls offering traditional Welsh delicacies, such as cawl (a hearty soup), bara brith (a fruit bread), and Welsh cakes, providing a delightful culinary experience alongside the cultural festivities.

Embracing Tradition and Innovation

While the National Eisteddfod is steeped in tradition, it also embraces innovation and contemporary expressions of Welsh culture. The festival features a diverse range of events that reflect modern Wales, from cutting-edge art installations to performances by contemporary musicians. This blend of tradition and modernity ensures that the Eisteddfod remains relevant and engaging to audiences of all ages.

A Celebration of Community and Identity

Beyond its cultural offerings, the National Eisteddfod is a celebration of community and identity. The festival fosters a sense of belonging and pride among Welsh people, providing a space for the Welsh language to flourish and for cultural connections to be strengthened. For visitors, the Eisteddfod offers an opportunity to engage with the warmth and hospitality of the Welsh people, making it a truly memorable experience.

The National Eisteddfod is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of Welsh culture and heritage that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors. Whether you’re a lover of the arts, a language enthusiast, or simply curious about Wales, the National Eisteddfod promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of this vibrant nation.

The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in Wales is a hidden gem, offering visitors a serene and scenic escape. This July, embark on an adventure along this historic waterway and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the Welsh countryside. Within easy distance of us at Nant Ddu Lodge & Spa, we recommend you spend some time exploring this Welsh wonder during your stay.

The canal stretches for 35 miles through the picturesque Brecon Beacons National Park, providing a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and rich history. The lush greenery, rolling hills, and peaceful waters create a calming environment that beckons you to slow down and appreciate nature. A haven for wildlife and a favourite with nature lovers, walkers, and cyclists, the canal offers something for everyone.

One of the best ways to explore the canal is by taking a leisurely boat trip. It is possible to hire a narrowboat, or you can join a guided tour for a few hours. As you glide along the water, you’ll pass charming villages, ancient bridges, and verdant fields. The pace of life slows down on the canal, allowing you to fully take in the serene surroundings. For those who prefer to stay on land, the towpath that runs alongside the canal is perfect for walking and cycling. The well-maintained path offers easy access to some of the most beautiful spots along the canal. Pack a picnic and enjoy a meal by the water, or stop by one of the many pubs and cafes dotted along the route for a taste of local cuisine.

Nature and history

Wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted by the variety of birds and animals that call the canal home. Keep an eye out for herons, kingfishers, and otters as you explore. The canal’s clear waters and abundant vegetation provide a rich habitat for these creatures, making it a prime spot for nature observation.

The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal has a fascinating history dating back to the late 18th century. Initially constructed to transport coal, iron, and limestone from the South Wales Valleys to the cities, the canal played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution. Despite its industrial beginnings, the canal was designed with an eye for beauty, winding its way through some of Wales’ most stunning landscapes. By the early 20th century, commercial use had almost entirely ceased. However, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and conservationists, the canal has been restored to its former glory and is now a cherished recreational space.

The Brecon Beacons National Park, which encompasses much of the canal, is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. This protected area is home to a variety of habitats, from ancient woodlands to open moorlands, each supporting unique plant and animal life. The canal itself is a haven for aquatic plants and provides vital habitats for numerous fish species.
