Winter walks and wild beauty in the Brecon Beacons

One of the greatest gifts the festive season brings is the air itself: cool, clear, and sharp with promise. Wrap up in layers, don good boots, and step out onto the many public footpaths of the Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog.  The renowned ridge-walk up Pen y Fan is still possible (weather permitting) and offers panoramic views over frosted moors. For a gentler stroll, try the Four Falls Trail or snow-laced valley walks through Waterfall Country — a joy even in winter’s hush.

Of course, after such walks, you’ll want warmth and comfort – the perfect opportunity to enjoy a drink and a meal at The Lodge, our much-loved bar and bistro. As night draws in early, the Brecon Beacons shine — indeed, the park is an International Dark Sky Reserve, so if skies are clear, head out to gaze at constellations, meteors or even (if you’re really lucky) the faint ribbon of aurora.

First up: Pen y Fan. If you’ve got your hiking boots ready, this is the one to tick off. It’s the highest peak in South Wales, and the views from the top are absolutely worth the climb.
